Unsafe abortion:  over 200 sex workers sensitized in Nakiwogo fishing community

FMP held a moonlight outreach on August 16th, 2024, in Nakiwogo fishing landing site to sensitize sex workers on sexual reproductive health and particularly dangers of unsafe abortion. The choice for a night outreach was informed by the availability of the target audience – sex workers. Other beneficiaries included – fishermen. Nakiwogo is known to host a high number sex worker – both male and female with some engaged in fish-for-sex exchanges.  As a result, there is a high prevalence of f sexually transmitted infections, unintended/ unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions. The outreach aimed to address these issues by raising awareness about safe sex practices, STI prevention, and the dangers of risky sexual behavior, including unsafe abortions and unwanted pregnancies.

During the outreach, the team conducted a “musawo” (health) session to provide accurate SRH information, providing free and accessible SRH services which included voluntary STI testing and treatment, cervical cancer screening, and the distribution of condoms and lubricants, PEP, PREP and family planning commodities to over 100 sex workers and other key population individuals. We also focused on increasing SRH knowledge among the broader Nakiwogo community, reaching over 200 residents with vital information on SRH services, access to care, treatment options, and available resources.

FMP strives to reach the disadvantaged populations in our communities to ensure no one is left behind.  Innovations like moonlight outreaches – which alter the time and reduce stigma on beneficiaries who walk into the outreach at their time of choosing, and musawo session which advance personalized health talks in safe spaces for sex workers – are our dreams come true.
