FMP’s executive director, Moses Odongo, participated in the Coalition to Stop Maternal Mortality from Unsafe Abortion in Uganda (CSMMUA) quarterly review meeting on 10th September 2024 at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kampala. This meeting brought together key stakeholders, including CEHURD, Marie Stopes Uganda, and other reproductive health advocates. The coalition advocates for safe abortion access and maternal mortality reduction held a joint coalition and the meeting focused on planning for the Global Day of Access to Safe and Legal Abortion on September 28, 2024.
Participants discussed strategies to address the legal, social, and geographical barriers that women face in accessing safe abortion services. A Values Clarification and Attitude Transformation (VCAT) exercise was conducted to ensure shared commitment to supportive environments for comprehensive abortion care and post-abortion services.
Through interactive discussions and collective reflection, the coalition developed a joint campaign plan for the Global Day of Access to Safe and Legal Abortion. The VCAT exercise reinforced members’ commitment to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The meeting concluded with a consensus on key strategies to promote safe abortion access, reduce stigma, and ultimately decrease maternal mortality due to unsafe abortions in Uganda.
