  • FMP Staff and Community Peer Mobilizers Trained on Sexual Pleasure to Enhance Service Delivery

Family Medical Point (FMP) recently conducted a two-day training for its staff, Community Peer Mobilizers (CPMs), and Board of Directors on the concept of sexual pleasure and its essential role in promoting Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

The training, conducted in collaboration with Amplify Change, is part of an ongoing effort to rethink how Sexual and Reproductive Health services are delivered to marginalized populations, with a particular focus on sex workers in fishing communities.

Sex workers in these communities often face significant barriers in accessing essential health services due to factors such as social stigma, geographical isolation, and limited healthcare infrastructure. The training aimed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to better understand the connection between sexual pleasure and overall well-being, helping them to deliver more holistic, inclusive, and effective interventions.

Addressing Barriers and Enhancing Service Delivery

In Uganda, challenges such as high maternal health risks and unintended pregnancies remain pressing concerns. A significant number of young women and those in vulnerable situations, encounter difficulties in making informed choices about their Sexual and Reproductive Health. The training emphasized the importance of approaching these challenges with sensitivity and inclusivity, ensuring that services are accessible and responsive to the unique needs of every individual.

By integrating pleasure-positive approaches into service delivery, healthcare providers can foster open and supportive conversations around sexual health, encourage safer practices, and empower individuals to take control of their well-being. The training also provided practical tools to help participants address community-specific concerns while promoting positive attitudes toward SRHR.

A Holistic Approach to Sexual and Reproductive Well-Being

FMP is committed to improving the overall well-being of sex workers and other marginalized populations by promoting a comprehensive, rights-based approach to sexual and reproductive health. The organization envisions a health system that is inclusive, equitable, and responsive, ensuring that individuals—regardless of their background or occupation—can access the information and services they need without fear of judgment or discrimination.

Through initiatives like this training, FMP seeks to build a strong foundation for community-led interventions that prioritize dignity, choice, and empowerment.

Looking Ahead

As FMP continues to implement this pleasure-based approach within fishing communities, collaboration with local stakeholders, healthcare providers, and community leaders will be crucial. By fostering partnerships and building capacity, the organization aims to create lasting change that enhances the quality of life for those who need it most.
