World AIDS Day – FMP to reach 1000 young people and sex workers in fishing communities.

FMP is scheduled to hold an annual outreach to fishing communities to commemorate the international World AIDS day. The outreach on 1st December 2023 shall be held at Kasenyi fishing community.

The outreach, aimed to promote a supportive community environment towards prevention of new HIV AIDS infections and positive living, targets to reach 1000 young people, women and sex workers based in the landing site.

As part of FMP’s integrated Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights Programme, the organization leverages the occasion of the international World AIDS Day to reach out to key populations to advance access to accurate SRHR information, promote access to services, demystify common myths impending overall access to information and utilization / uptake of services and or adoption of behaviors that promote health seeking.

Providing accurate information about HIV/AIDS to people in rural and hard to reach locations and fishing communities remains a critical component in the fight to end the scourge. The Uganda Demographic Health Survey report of 2022 shows that nearly 50% of people in rural locations do not have comprehensive knowledge about HIV/AIDS  compared to urban areas at 35%. Fishing communities in particular present a very high prevalence rate of HIV with studies averaging at between 12% – 20% compared to the 06% prevalence rate nationally.

The outreach, which will include info-tainment sessions, sexuality education and provision of all sexual reproductive health services, is FMP’s annual key event in which it reaches to the communities and is now in its 5th year.
