Fishing communities are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS and currently shoulder 75% of the new infections in Uganda according to the Uganda Demographic Survey report, 2016.
FMP has for over 05 years prioritized AIDS mitigation services for fishing communities and it was refreshing to host a coalition of more than 30 partners to mark the annual commemoration of the Worlds AIDS Day on 1 December 2022 at Kasenyi fishing landing site , one of the busiest in Lake Victoria with a daily population of 7000 people.
FMP worked with youth led and servicing organization, Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU), The Aids Support Organization (TASO), Reproductive Health Uganda (RHU), among others to raise awareness and engage young people and sex workers living in Kasenyi fishing landing site through edutainment led by top musicians in the country – Eddy Kenzo, CocoFinger and Jaja Bruce among others. The key message called on the fisherfolks to utilize the available AIDS mitigation services and adoption of behaviors that will lead to an end of new infection.
Most lakeshores and fishing landing sites are hard-to-reach by nature and have limited access to healthcare services including limited access to HIV testing commodities and treatment. There are also no CSOs and service providers prioritizing service delivery in fishing communities.
Our programmes coordinator, Ms. Amon Eunice, led the awareness sessions, creatively engaging both the audience on condom use, PEP and PrEP use as well as other rights based SRHR services that FMP offers including family planning.
1,011 people tested for HIV/AIDS, 219 women were served with various family planning methods, and nearly 5,800 people were reached through edutainment sessions and media programmes.
