We had the honor of hosting two extraordinary change makers — Carol Agengo, Co-chairperson of our Board and Regional Director for Africa at HelpAge International, and Wanja Maina, Founder of The Hummingbird Grassroots Centre, Kenya.
Their visit provided an invaluable opportunity for reflection and learning. We engaged in deep conversations about the progress FMP is making in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Uganda’s fishing communities, as well as the ongoing challenges we face in the sector.
We explored critical issues — from the need for better access to information and services, to the vital role of Comprehensive Sexuality Education in empowering young people. We also addressed the pressing realities of unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and the unique vulnerabilities faced by sex workers, people with disabilities, and young girls in our communities.
As Carol put it:
“Comprehensive Sexuality Education isn’t just about biology — it’s about equipping young people with the knowledge, confidence, and agency to make informed choices. When we do this, we’re not just preventing unintended pregnancies; we’re empowering the next generation to shape their own futures.”

The discussions reaffirmed the importance of our collective effort in closing the gaps and ensuring that all individuals — regardless of their circumstances — have access to the information, services, and support they need to live healthy, informed lives.
We are grateful for the leadership and partnership of Carol and Wanja, whose vision and dedication continue to inspire us. Together, we are creating a future where sexual and reproductive health is not a privilege, but a right for all.
