Many girls in fishing communities of Wakiso District, Uganda still struggle with menstrual hygiene. This issue often goes unnoticed because it is rarely talked about and seen as a private matter. For some, the challenge comes from period poverty. For example, Longoko, a senior one student, shared, “buying pads is a luxury at our home. My mum spends UGX 2500 to feed a family of 5 children, so, she can’t afford buying me pads of UGX 3000.”

Just like Longoko, many girls in fishing communities cannot afford proper menstrual products. Some have to use torn clothes or even soil wrapped in plastic. Sadly, some are sexually exploited in exchange for pads. Every month, girls often miss three to four days of school, which causes them to fall behind and lose confidence.

You can help change this story. From September 8 to 12, we are joining GlobalGiving’s Passport to Purpose campaign. Every donation will be matched from a $215,000 fund, so your gift, no matter the amount will have double the impact. Your support will help provide menstrual cups for girls in Wakiso. When we come together, even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
