In the recent daily monitor’s feature on the hidden toll of unsafe abortions in Uganda published on 23rd of February 2026 brings to light a painful reality that many families quietly endure. Behind every statistic is a daughter, a sister, a mother, navigating difficult circumstances, often without clear information, accessible services, or supportive systems.
While Uganda has made progress in reducing maternal mortality, unsafe abortion remains a preventable contributor to severe complications and loss of life. Alongside gaps in contraception and youth-friendly services, legal ambiguity and limited public awareness of what the law permits continue to drive fear, stigma, and delays in seeking care.
Uganda’s legal framework allows abortion under certain circumstances, yet inconsistent interpretation and lack of clear operational guidance create uncertainty for both women and health providers. This uncertainty often pushes procedures underground, increasing health risks and system costs.
Addressing the challenge requires:
• Strengthening access to modern contraception and comprehensive sexuality education
• Ensuring clear, evidence-based policy guidance and provider training
• Expanding access to quality, dignified post-abortion care
• Promoting informed community dialogue to reduce stigma and misinformation
Strategic alignment between health investment, legal clarity, and community engagement is essential to protect lives, safeguard rights, and strengthen Uganda’s health system.
