Abortion remains a highly sensitive and controversial issue in Uganda and many parts of the world. However, regardless of one’s stance on the issue, it is important to acknowledge that many women in Uganda especially in low income communities seek abortions often in unsafe conditions, leading to serious health risks and complications. Therefore, post-abortion care is crucial to ensure that these women receive the necessary medical attention and support to recover from the procedure and avoid further complications. In fishing communities around the world, access to these services can be limited, particularly when it comes to sexual reproductive health and rights. Dedicated to promoting women’s health, Family Medical Point has recognized the need for post-abortion care services in these underserved areas.
In a study done by BMC Health Services Research in both Uganda and Ethiopia, service coverage was high and improved over time, but facilities’ capacity to provide basic PAC services was low in Uganda (17.8% in 2019). The number of PAC cases increased by 15.5% over time in Uganda. This shows that fishing communities often face unique challenges, including limited access to healthcare facilities, lack of awareness about sexual reproductive health and rights, and prevailing stigmas surrounding abortion. These factors can contribute to unsafe abortion practices, resulting in serious health complications for women. Family Medical Point has recognized the urgency to address these issues and has tailored their services to meet the specific needs of these communities.
We offer a range of post-abortion care services designed to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of women. Our dedicated team of healthcare professionals provides medical examinations, necessary treatments, and follow-up care to address any complications or concerns that may arise after an abortion. Moreover, they prioritize counseling services to provide emotional support and guidance throughout the recovery process.
Recognizing the importance of education, Family Medical Point actively engages with fishing communities to raise awareness about comprehensive Sexual reproductive health rights and post-abortion care. We conduct outreaches and awareness campaigns to dispel myths, break down stigmas, and empower women to make informed choices about their reproductive health. By partnering with local community leaders and organizations, we ensure that our message reaches the wider population.
Family Medical Point understands that sustainable change requires collaboration. We actively seek partnerships with local healthcare providers, government agencies, and NGOs to strengthen our impact and extend our reach within fishing communities. By working together, we can develop integrated systems that provide ongoing support and ensure that women receive the care they need, even beyond the immediate post-abortion phase.
