Access to accurate information on sexual and reproductive health services from a trusted source is central to correct decision making. Sex workers hidden in their safe places in the bustling fishing landing sites which are distanced from the main communities find it extremely hard to access medical care and information from mainstream public healthcare facilities.
FMP’s ‘Musawo Session’ model was designed to address the needs of these disadvantaged communities.
The Luganda word “Musawo” translates to “health worker” and these sessions aim at having dedicated health workers hold monthly open conversations with sex workers at their safe spaces within the landing sites that they work from. The sessions provide a platform where sex workers meet with medical personnel for an open discussion about pressing SRH challenges they encounter, including access to family planning services, post-abortion care, and Sexually Transmitted Infections prevention, testing and treatment. It’s during these sessions they get to ask questions and receive clear, accurate information from health professionals. The sessions are non judgemental, inclusive and confidential. The sessions also link participants in need of services to service points. ,In the lead-up to International Women’s Day, FMP will advance the rights of sex workers to sexual and reproductive health accurate information. The conversations during the sessions will also advance self care.
